Cumulus 2 is an exploration of memory and loss. Memories of those lost replace physical presence and expose themselves as reverberations more than physical fact. In this piece a dying man converses about a cherished, antique duck decoy. This recording is played back and re-recorded in a resonant space in the style of composer Alvin Lucier’s I Am Sitting in a Room, 1969. With the repetition of this process, the natural resonant frequencies remain as melodic remnants of the speech. Video footage of a blossoming cumulus cloud repeats itself, blurring slightly with each repetition until all legibility of the clouds is replaced with movements of light and color. As with memories, these remnants become separate phenomena to be explored and discovered in their own rite.
